  • @ Arnox:
I think I didn't ever op you, did I Gauche?
  • @ Gauche:
Nah, found this place. Thought one of you made it but it seems auto generated
  • @ Vendor-Lazarus:
I've been doing forays into Reddit, and it really is bad. I've not encountered anyone blocking me yet, though a few subs keep removing my posts silently, and one banned me (I don't post anything against the rules btw). But what's most hilarious is how they keep sending a "mental wellness" bot after you, and how you get stalkers that downvote you everywhere. There's also those that downvote only those you respond to, or that responds to you, so they think you're the one downvoting them. The absolute fanaticism to their previous "insert organization here" is astounding. Talk about blind Brand Loyalty. Sunk Cost fallacy. They don't want to hear sourced truth if it goes against their holy icon. If you're allowed to source it, because they block links too, or only some links.. LOL
  • @ Phiwise_:
Yeah Reddit's been dead and rotting for a while. Which is a shame, because it's still probably the best format informational media site on the internet. (Well, of the open ones, anyway. Wikis and things like reddit don't really belong in the same category). It's so bad, with nothing to fill the hole, that I've honestly been thinking of building a new one. I used to get all sorts of info from all over the internet from reading reddit, now anything outside of a tiny walled garden of subs is a waste of time. And the gardens are dying as ye olde style users stop logging in as often.
  • @ Vendor-Lazarus:
Communities.win is a reddit alternative. VOAT used to be one, but it went under.
  • @ Phiwise_:
Plan9 was a (minorly better) Unix alternative, but wasn't better enough to displace it's parent. Voat was, and .win is, a ghost town because they're just copies. Until recently reddit hadn't degraded enough to be truly worse than them, so their lack of information made browsing them worse than reddit. (Worth noting that memes don't get to count as information for the purpose of the general reader.)
  • @ Phiwise_:
True, but not super meaningful. Voting doesn't have to be good to still be better than bump sorting on sites with more than a small crowd of users. Plus I was more referring to pervasive threading, which reddit used to do pretty well, and still does better than most. I don't think anyone would argue voting makes much of a difference among, say, youtube comments.
  • @ Arnox:
For YouTube comments, I'm pretty sure votes are all but ignored by the algorithm, and I know for a fact that downvotes don't actually work there either, so while voting is generally mostly harmless in YouTube comment sections, it doesn't really help anything either.
  • @ Arnox:
    pervasive threading
I'm assuming you're talking about how comments on Reddit-based systems are sorted into trees? In that case, actually yeah, there are indeed some merits to such a system and I wish we had the option for that over here at Sanctuary should users want it, but even so, pervasive threading does have its own negatives compared to the usual date-sorted post system of forums. With date-sorted posts, the latest reply is always given precedence which does a lot to make sure that the conversation is kept "current" and every post has its time in the light.
  • @ Arnox:
Voting doesn't have to be good to still be better than bump sorting on sites with more than a small crowd of users.
Sorry. This take I am hard disagreeing with. I literally cannot think of a single situation where voting would be better than bump-sorting. I get that bump-sorting isn't perfect, but it is still a far cry better than vote sorting.
  • @ Phiwise_:
Most all of this is only justifiable on quite small websites. Even moderately-large forums quickly get swamped by inanity from bump-sorting. I think you're being too rigid about this. I'm not trying to argue bump-sorting is all wrong, only that it's sometimes wrong, and that size is what determines that sometimes. Other times it can be just fine or great depending on the person.
  • @ Arnox:
If I am being harsh against vote sorting, it's because I've been using Reddit for over five years, and in that time, I have never seen a situation where I said to myself, "Man, I'm glad this site has voting." lol Literally, not once. But I do want to address the argument that moderately large forums get swamped in silly posts. For one, you should know that there ARE certain kinds of nonsense posts that are against the rules here at Sanctuary already. Namely, flooding, blatant thread derails, bumping 3+ day old threads with just "lol", and completely nonsensical posts.
  • @ Arnox:
Besides those four things, I can just tell you I've seen plenty of completely inane posts along with one-sentence Twitter brigades be upvoted on Reddit. Furthermore, you should check out the official XenForo forums and the LTT forums. Those are large forums that still have very manageable postings and threads.
  • @ Vendor-Lazarus:
Heh. Sry. It seems I hit a bugbear of yours. I can agree that your take is much more rational, from what I've seen. I've got a few issues I drone on about as well. google, steam, game genres...ok, I better stop there.
  • @ Arnox:
You guys are both totally banned for realz. >_>
  • @ Arnox:
There shall be no discussion on Sanctuary.
  • @ Houseman:
And that was the last message ever posted
  • @ Arnox:
Fucking hell, can you imagine someone in the very distant future who somehow inherits control of Sanctuary then does that shit?
  • @ Arnox:
"You know what, I wanna play some Black Ops 2." And after getting wall-hack insta-knifed from the AI in Black Cocks 2 for the 30th time, I just fucking uninstalled it. Fuck that shit. Holy hell, it's so annoying.
