Verizon agrees to sell Tumblr to owner of Wordpress

Verizon is set to sell the social network Tumblr to Automattic Inc, the owner of online publishing tool Wordpress. A source familiar with the deal puts the price-tag "well below" $20 million, while another source puts it below $10 million.
The big picture: Tumblr, while unprofitable, hosts more than 450 million blogs and was once considered a major player in the social media space. The network was acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in 2013, before moving under Verizon's umbrella through the carrier's acquisition of Yahoo in 2017. Verizon's desire to sell Tumblr had been previously known, but as of May, Pornhub had been the only bidder to show public interest.
Automattic Inc. will buy the network and take on its 200 employees.
Between the lines: Tumblr has faced backlash over the years for not properly monitoring pornographic content, which Verizon ultimately banned last year. Automattic's Chief Executive Matt Mullenweg told the Wall Street Journal that he plans to maintain the ban.

I still maintain the belief that Tumblr is the best free blogging site. That might just probably be because it supports bandcamp embeds though.
It helps you can edit the html so no one can leave micro-feedback on your posts or follow you aside from manually entering the url to do so.

I miss blogs.

What's funny is, forum software is so powerful that we can function as a blog and as a download site and as a discussion place AND as a video outlet. The only thing we can't be out of the box is a marketplace, really. But that's only because forum software doesn't come with transaction software.

I mean, you can still work as a marketplace without transaction software, Tumbler does (did?) for artists Its just less streamlined

Well, there's a few paid plugins for XenForo that would give us full transaction capabilities, so you're kind of right. I was merely talking about out of the box features though.

Can't call it a blog if I can't edit the html to have meatspin.gif set on repeat for the background image on my profile.
That is fundamentally crucial for blog-tier status.

So you want MySpace barbarism again, is that right?

Yeah, but that's so inconvenient. :( I have to press, like, four more buttons and everything.
