I usually really like Michael Mann movies, but damn, he really didn't do a good job with this one for whatever reason. And we don't even get to see Al Pacino hamming it up for our trouble either. I mean, c'mon, Mann. You've done Heat and Collateral. I KNOW you can do way better than this. And it's not like this was Michael's first rodeo either. Heat came out in 1995. Collateral came out in 2004. Boy's had some time to perfect his craft.
It's not like the plot itself is a bad one. It's pretty generic, especially nowadays, but you can have a generic plot and still deliver a kick-ass movie. But the acting here from some of these actors is just... Soooo stilted. Like some of them were just trying to get through these scenes as fast as possible. There's also some occasionally weird cinematography going on and some bad music selections made for this movie here. Not to mention some baffling stupidity on display here in the story. And finally, there's also three cringy-ass sex scenes to top it all off, although admittedly, I got the Unrated Director's Cut edition. Maybe the original version is a lot more calmed down on that front. (FUTURE EDIT: Nope. Original version gets all three cringy sex scenes as well.)
The only thing I can think of is that some kind of executive interference was going on here. Or maybe the movie was rushed out. Maybe both. It's not entirely without merit though. Action's alright, and there's still some rather funny banter in this movie. I was giggling like an idiot a fair few times. Overall then, I wouldn't recommend this movie, but if you really must see it, then I guess there's worse movies you could be watching.
