For those not in the know, Dread is a Reddit-esque community for the darkweb used for discussing such. It's usually seen as the "bad boy" community next to certain image boards like 4chan. But does this dark net den grant its users more leeway than Sanctuary when it comes to the rules? Well, uh... No.
Here's a copy of the Dread rules as of May 6th, 2025:
As a free-speech platform, without the unjustified censoring provided by clearnet sites such as Reddit, we will thrive to allow all content discussion and cater for as many different communities as we can. However, based on my own morals and issues of legality, it is essential that some ground rules are set in place to prevent unlawful content being shared on the platform.
Users must NOT, under any circumstances, post or privately discuss any of the following categories within the platform:
Child pornography
Pro-terrorism or terrorist propaganda
Harmful weapons/weapons of mass destruction
Poisons
Assassination services or media related to harm/murder
There are also community guidelines which all users much follow at all times:
1) No on-site trades/transactions of any sort.
See this post for clarification of what is counted
.
2) No spam posts/comments/messages.
3) No vote brigading/manipulation. This includes requesting upvotes from users.
4) No sharing of fear mongering content, with no factual basis or evidence. (AKA NO FUD)
5) No direct personal information of any individual. (AKA NO DOXXING)
See this post for clarification
.
6) No impersonating any known individual or staff member.
7) Subdread moderator roles are a position of trust, you are expected to remain neutral in moderation decisions, sticking to set subdread rules and ensuring site-wide rules are complied with. Using this position to generate profit for yourself through bribes and manipulation will gain you a site-wide ban, no exceptions.
8) No spreading blatant misinformation in hopes of tricking those less intellectually fortunate (or high).
AND ABOVE ALL ELSE!
Anonymity is sacrosanct. Avoid discussion that may reveal too much about yourself or another user.
Other than these, use common sense, don't be an idiot and abuse the free service in any way. These rules can be updated at anytime.
Let's break this down, shall we?
Although not technically part of the rules, I found this rather hilarious as just the discussion of dark web markets alone is actually discussions of illegal activity.
Mostly aligned with us. We do not allow media or links to such of CP either, although we do allow people simply discussing it.
Not aligned with us. You can post and discuss this if you want to. We may flame your fucking ass to hell for such selfish idiocy... But you can post it.
Not aligned with us. You can discuss and post this shit all damn day.
Not aligned with us. Exactly the same as the above rule.
Aligned with us. You can't sell your 'wares on Sanctuary, period, no matter what it is.
Now THIS... While this is not technically aligned with us, this is also something I've been thinking about off and on for a while actually. If a poster came onto Sanctuary and started posting videos of the rape, torture, and murder of innocent people, shouldn't we insta-ban that poster? I can't think of any reason whatsoever why we should allow such posts. But still, huge additions to the rules of Sanctuary are a VERY big deal. We haven't had such an addition in literally years, so that's why I haven't really moved on this yet.
Aligned with us. As said already, you can't sell your 'wares on Sanctuary.
Aligned with us.
Voting systems...
Definitely not aligned with us. This stuff needs to be brought up and discussed so that the truth may be found and idiots laughed at.
Aligned with us.
Each member's username is unique. You can't copy that for an alt account. Also, your ridiculously low post count will stick out like a sore thumb. And you can't impersonate me. I made damn sure of that. :)
Mostly aligned with us. If you're caught taking bribes or manipulating the community, I don't know about banning you but... Your ass would definitely be kicked to the curb, that's for sure.
Definitely not aligned with us. Sanctuary does not hold your damn hand. You need to be your own censor and filter. Practice critical thinking. Be the boss, not someone who depends solely upon others to tell them what is right or wrong. If you believe blatant misinformation, then you will suffer the consequences of such, whatever they may be, and that will be an important lesson for you. Probably one of the most valuable lessons you'll ever have, really.
Eh... Sorta not aligned with us. Houseman was talking earlier about just banning all PI including one's own. Maybe. That was also a rule change that I was mulling over.

So, all in all, the Dread forums fail in all but one rule which was the media depicting harm/murder. It's official then. Sanctuary is way more free than Dread.
