I have this slightly weird small goal of mine to find good movies set on tropical islands. So far, I have four I can personally recommend. Six Days Seven Nights, 50 First Dates, Cast Away, and McHale's Navy. I got this movie hoping that I would find a shiny new fifth entry in that set, but... It's pretty damn shaky and I sadly don't think I can call this one tubular. And it really should have been a shoe-in, but the plot itself is just so utterly... Uninteresting. The beautiful resort and the beautiful beach and the beautiful waves and the beautiful babes... You'd think that would be enough, and perhaps for some, it certainly will be, but for me, it's just not. And especially not with not one, but two whole montages set to some cringy-ass rap songs.
Thinking about this some more, it could also be the fact that there's simply not enough characterization of any of the other characters in this movie besides the protagonist, Anne Chadwick. I've seen movies with dead-ass simple plots still absolutely kill it because I loved at least some of the characters in the film, and I've seen films with generally bland characters still get away with it due to the movie's plot and/or world.
It could also be that I am simply not the target audience for this movie, and that's pretty fair. What I know about surfing could fill a book if it didn't have any pages in it whatsoever. It looks pretty neat and I'd like to try it, but that's about as far as I'll be going with that. Still though, a really great movie delving into a subject matter will be interesting not just to experts in that subject, but also to newcomers as well. So, all in all, if you just can't get enough of tropical beaches, or especially, if you can't get enough of surfing, check this one out for sure. Otherwise, you're better off just looking for another wave to ride.
