This was one of my relative's favorite movies back in the day, much to the chagrin of one of my other relatives because of how utterly cheesy it was. Well, a long time later, I remembered this movie and wondered, "Alright, I need to see just how bad this really is. Maybe I'll find another so-bad-it's-good movie." And... I kinda did, but sadly mostly didn't. But before we get into that, let's talk about what this movie is, plot wise. Billy Jack is about a mysterious man named Billy Jack who's a lone cowboy who plays by his own rules and protects horses, Indians, kids, and Indian kids. No Indian kid horses though. Oh, also, he's a green beret with a troubled past. Because why not. Of course he is. He also knows green beret kung fu. I'm not kidding. This is the actual movie.
The whole plot is basically the poor, innocent, perfect Indians are being picked on by the evil white policemen and crotchety old people who just don't know what freedom and love is, mannnn. Look, I'm not here to downplay any prejudice that Indian peoples have experienced or are experiencing in the past. My issue here is how utterly ham-fisted and immature this writing is. But all of that would have totally OK and forgiven if it was at least entertainingly bad. And... I'd say about 1/6th of this movie is genuinely in so-bad-it's-good territory and then 4/6ths of this is just fucking boring or cringe. Credit where it's due though. The other sixth of the movie was actually some moments in it where it did flirt with competent writing. Times where I said, "Huh, that scene was legitimately kinda interesting," or I was actually laughing WITH the movie, not at it. But such moments were so rare and not significant enough at all for it to even come close to salvaging this movie.
Still though, I'm teetering on whether I should get rid of this movie or whether I should keep it for meme material. If you got an opinion on that, let me know down below. AND MAKE SURE TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE.
