Saw a screenshot of the Patreon.com's page of a cosplayer making hundreds of thousands being passed around, supposedly something to gawk at.
Later read an article about how, despite free alternatives, people have been paying for AOL email for years and it sums up to hundreds of millions every year.
Seems like the people who pay for AOL mostly feel shameful and try to hide it, unlike the people who patronize on the .com, who probably don't have any issue with paying for it and are proud to have their usernames displayed as patrons.
The people that don't pay may be the more vocal crowd, snickering anyone that may have had the audacity to trigger any cognitive dissonance on the free riders.
