Today’s test subject is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, released in January 2014. A spinoff of Metal Gear Solid series, developed and ported in-house by Platinum Games, also known for e.g. NieR: Automata.

[it] exhibits very weird behaviour with the location of its saves/configurations directory. Indeed, a quick look at game’s PCGamingWiki article reveals that the game doesn’t really handle user paths properly

Read the article to know the issue in depth and obtain a fix/patch.

-----------

Curious how these big studios still manage to mess up these sort of things and don't even bother fixing it.

dark souls 3 did something similar. Hid the save in your roaming folder rather than my games or its actual folder

I always preferred save files in the actual game folder..Barring that, My games is adequate, though I never really use My Documents.
I've always created and maintained my own folder hierarchies, but I suppose most rely on those created by Microsoft.
The absolute best solution would be having My Games as default, with Game folder being the other standard, and with a custom option for full choice.

*Edit*
Screw online/coud storages as default. I'm looking at you steam!
With that as a choice only, then people using it have no one else to blame. ^^

I don't mind having an online/cloud storage as a backup but not as the primary save location.
