The originator of this story is actually not history, believe it or not, but a graphic novel written by Frank Miller, although of course, the Battle of Thermopylae was indeed a real historical battle engaged in by Sparta. Both the graphic novel and its subsequent movie are not really aiming for historical accuracy at all, but rather, to convey a message and to give the audience an incredibly emotionally charged story. Everything in the novel and movie is decided on to serve that purpose when the actual history would be too inconvenient for such.

For example, it is completely glossed over that Sparta had a very prominent policy of enslaving any nation they conquered. And these slaves weren't treated well either. The thinking was, if you were weak enough for us to conquer you, you deserved to be slaves. Definitely a far cry from the overall notion of "FREEDOM, FUCK YEAH" in the movie. Ironically, this was also what contributed in a huge way to the downfall of Sparta as a nation, but that's another story for another time. I don't think this would bother me nearly as much though if there was a simple disclaimer at the beginning of the movie stating that this movie would not be fully historically accurate at all, but there isn't. I don't know. You could say I'm nitpicking here, and that might be fair, but it personally bothers me regardless.

Another issue is just how how much freaking nudity and sex there is in this movie. And hey, I get it. It's a gritty and violent historical (but not historically accurate) tale. There's gonna be some nudity, but there is a line where it goes from, "This is how it was and how we're gonna do it," to where it feels like a porno mixed in with an actual movie. It just detracts from the whole thing in the end. Also doesn't help that there some nasty scenes here to add to all that. Like, full on repulsive. For the repulsive scenes though, I can't deny that they do serve the overall purpose of propagandizing you against the Persians. In fact, by the time you get to the battle scenes in the movie, you are so fully immersed in the hate-vision that you are completely and unabashedly on King Leonidas' side, wanting to see some Persians getting fucked with a spear and sword.

And deliver on that, this movie does. It does it very well. There are definitely some things I don't like about this film, but even with all of that, it strikes a deeply violent and rebellious chord within me personally. I love my freedom, I love my violence, and I love me some professionalism. 300 has that in spades. It's got so much fucking freedom, violence, and professionalism, it's coming out of its eyeballs. And sex, unfortunately. An awful lot of awkward nudity and sex. But whatever. Can't have everything I guess. So yeah, this movie is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

Nah, it's not the morality of it nearly so much as just... How much of it there is. It doesn't jive with the rest of the film.
I've watched it twice (not recently, true), but can't remember a single sex scene. Just the battle at the pass and the stuff surrounding it. Maybe I'll re-watch it soon-ish.

There is one sex scene and tons of nudity and sexual acts on the side. Now, I MIGHT have gotten the unrated version, but the file didn't say that it was.

EDIT: Nope. There was never an unrated edition released according to https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/300-Blu-ray/451/
