There is a BBS hosted in my neighborhood and it's one of the oldest longest surviving BBS, I found it looking at the global map of all of them on FIDOnet, it's in the basement of a comic store and has just been sitting there running on this old PC since the 90s lol. The people that are into BBS software seriously are more in it for the nostalgia, they like to use the oldest hardware possible and keep it all the same as it was, like a time capsule. But they have kept up with the times, I wouldn't call it obsolete yet. I was checking out the BBS subReddit and this guy has a point also this discussion I think is interesting, it's about user privacy and online culture, some things never change I guess. https://www.reddit.com/r/bbs/comments/11bh7k7/why_are_so_many_bbs_systems_openly_hostile_to/?sort=new It could maybe be used alongside current other p2p routing networks like tor, which if combined with mesh networking and being able to connect through radio or something than it would defeat the need to rely on ISP's beholden to government regulations, I was thinking this would be a better alternative to how the darknet markets operate, having to find new markets but the same vendors PGP verified says to me the weak point is TOR. I think the process of using the internet by having an active connection to a server where you are loading data from is not ideal, all of the benefits of web 2.0 like dynamic web pages, streaming, embedding, etc have not really gone on to revolutionize technology but instead are used to make the internet worse having a constantly GOOGLE alphabet ads and god knows what under the hood. I use an old computer and it sucks because it slows down on a lot of webpages, or when an ad plays. That's the limitation. I guess I should buy a new phone and a new computer so they can advertise to me without delay, and play a bunch of DRM infested video games and not be able to load Steam on Windows 7 offline. I think doors and portals are an interesting concept in these trying times.
