At first I wondered just what the fuck Zenimax is thinking here, but then I thought about how Fallout 76 wasn't going to be released on Steam. Then it came to me. Bethesda is planning to launch yet ANOTHER DRM platform. And they plan to sell all the games they've released on it and now they (stupidly) want to crack down on used game sales to funnel people to their online store. Now, I don't know this for sure, but I'm calling it right now. What do you guys think?

Seems like just a one-off thing. If you aren't an authorized reseller, you can't go around claiming that your product is "new" as opposed to "used".

Nobody's saying that you can't resell used games, just that you can't sell things second-hand with the same verbiage used as if it's first-hand.

Yeah that's Zenimax's latest statement but I think they're just backpedaling. Let's be honest, if they weren't starting an online store, why would they even give a shit in the first place, even if technically they're right?

Just basic brand-protection stuff. They should always care. They don't want false complaints over their "new" product, nor do they want people to damage their reputation.

Except they've never complained about this before in their life until now.

Without reading anything and with my tinfoil hat snugly on my head, I'd say that they want to discourage people from returning Fallout 76 after they find out it's buggy crap.

/ joke post.

I don't know but they better not be using the FO4 engine or a derivative of it for any of their future games.

Have there been other incidents where unauthorized resellers sold things as "new" before now? Were they allowed, or shut down? Is this simply the first article written about something that's been happening for years?

In all my years and years of gaming, this is the very first time I've seen anyone give a shit about this.

NOTE: Not about used games. There's been shitstorms about that for a long time. But in terms of New condition preowned games, yeah. No one has ever said anything.

I try to be level and charitable when someone takes an odd action like this, but given how their company also tried monetizing player made mods, I'm going to assume the worst from them for everything.

They only said "unathourised sellers" so you could still take it in to gamestop or Ebgames and sell it, sure you'll get ripped off (I once got $1.20 for a game) but you can still sell it. Or you could use the facebook marketplace, or ebay. Unless this starts happening more often i'm not too worried about it

Used sales would only effect consoles though. Even if they launch their own storefront it won't affect consoles, since they go through the ps store or xbox whatever, and since you can't resell pc games (unless you count steams refund system), cracking down on used sales won't do anything to drive people to their store.

I think they've mentioned its a modified version of the fo4 engine, i'm not completely certain though.

This is a AAA publisher, gaijin. They don't work off the same logic as the rest of us mere mortals.
