I'm gonna be honest, I was expecting some more bullshit, but surprisingly, it looks good. There you go, Microsoft. You can put that on your advertisements.

"It looks good."

I might be able to get behind apps being centered, but I don't like the start button being in the center. Tell you what didn't look good though was all the cringey corporate "emotional" nonsense they kept spouting in between the feature reveals. Was cringey and hilarious for the wrong reasons. I do love though how the presenter couldn't keep himself from chortling just a little when he mentioned Windows Update. That was gold. Even they know how shit it is.

Speaking of which, what will also be a deciding factor they didn't talk about was if they're finally going to stop being fucking dicks and let people disable auto-updates entirely. We will see come holiday 2021 (and the insider builds). There is also promising rumors from the leaked build that it's gonna be a lot lighter than 10. Besides that, the renovated desktops look good, and the app groups are a good idea as well. They FINALLY tossed out that fucking Metro shite absolutely nobody liked and are going back to Aero. And finally. from what I can glean from Satya's bit, it looks like they're now FINALLY getting the message and want to make Windows less like Apple again overall and let people decide what they want to do with the OS in general. Again, we will see come holiday 2021 if they actually mean that.

EDIT: TPM requirements it turns out have been way overblown, although Microsoft really buried the true requirements. These are the actual CPU requirements.

EDIT 2: Now it looks like Microsoft is going back to the 2.0 requirement. But then on Monday they said they're still evaluating... >_>

Fuck centered starbutton and taskbar icons! I hate it, with a passion.
I don't know what articles or vids you've watched, but I got the exact opposite conclusion. They're going Apple style hard.
They're also going to remove control panel, and probably automate a lot more things.
It's going to be awful.

If the leaked build is any indication, you can move it back to the left.

They've been trying to remove the Control Panel for a very long time now. They've just been super slow about it. I don't know if I have an issue with them removing it PER SE, but they HAVE TO give it at least the exact same functionality as the options in the Control Panel or else, yeah, I would totally agree.

Ultimately, I have no idea how Windows 11 is going to be. I just know my two biggest fucking gripes with 10 by far are its absolute dogshit performance as compared to previous versions of Windows, and its forced updates. If they can fix those things while keeping it completely self-sufficient while offline while also keeping it as backwards-compatible as possible, I think it will at least be a solid foundation.

And hey, if all else fails, we bail to Linux and don't look back.

Made an edit to the OP with information about the infamous TPM requirement. Turns out it's mostly false.

I've turned off updates on Win 10. It's doable. I still hate Win 10. Even more than 8. It's a long way from the gold standard XP set.

You can't turn off updates on 10 without using third party programs to hamstring it. Although technically rare, Microsoft has forced even people with Professional to update even when their settings had it fully off.

Hey, Microsoft, wasn't 10 supposed to be it? Ya know, 'buy once, update forever'. On a more serious note, not surprised they're releasing a new one. Gotta keep that money coming in. But I'll do what I did with 7 and use it till I have no choice but to upgrade..

absolute dogshit performance
What do you mean? I've been using it for the last year and haven't noticed any performance issues

You can just ignore it though. It's been nagging me to update but I just keep ignoring it

Trust me. This is a good thing. Rolling updates may work on Linux (to a point), but with Windows, it's a much different story. Having major sectioned off iterations is the much better way to go instead of this constantly updating mess that screws with software compatibility, hardware compatibility, and brings all these half-baked features to the table.

What do you mean? I've been using it for the last year and haven't noticed any performance issues
Well, terrible in comparison to past editions of Windows. Run any kind of Windows 10 debloater script and or just run one of the heavily edited versions and you'll see just how much faster 10 can be without the bullshit that Microsoft insists keeping on for every default install. Then there's the fact that Linux actually runs some Windows games BETTER than Windows 10. Top kek.

You can just ignore it though. It's been nagging me to update but I just keep ignoring it
For most of the updates, yes, you can ignore them, but there has been at least one (recent) instance where Microsoft has forced EVERYONE to update. Except maybe the LTSC branch.

Do you have an example of such a scenario?

Closest one I know of is intel graphic settings being a microsoft store app thing now but you can still manually update the drivers.
Oh you can do that, but generally, it's MUCH easier to just have Windows Update fetch and install all the drivers from its massive ass database for you. That's one thing I will give Microsoft props for.

I think it also installs any needed frameworks/redistributables for you.

AND NOW FOR A FUN NEW UPDATE!

Looks like Microsoft actually WILL be enforcing a TPM 2.0 requirement. In other news, police are trying to talk Microsoft's Windows division out of commiting corporate and commercial suicide. :)

Ofc you have to use third party programs. Your initial statement made it seem like you couldn't in any way turn it off.
I also wouldn't go so far as to use "hamstring". It indicates that you've hobbled and/or made your version of Win 10 worse in some way.

Those are direct OEM/device manufacturer requirements. They do not apply to consumer installations of Windows 11 (thankfully). Basically, what that document's saying is that, in order to get that shiny "Windows 11 Approved" stamp for a computer, they need to conform to the specifications listed in the document, and of course, to take full advantage of all Windows 11 features, you, of course, need a camera.

What about "Windows 11 Home edition requires an Internet connection and a Microsoft Account to complete device setup on first use." then?

Yeah, that one's legit.

I'm gonna be honest, I personally didn't pay much attention to that because I always get the highest edition possible anyway, but it is still definitely an issue.

So, I thought I had disabled Windows Update entirely.. Seems I was wrong... Fuck.
If you need an old build of 10 to do a clean install with, you can pull them online using HeiDoc.net's Windows ISO Downloader tool. You can even download the very first RTM build of 10, 1507.

Speaking of which, I should do a piece comparing the earliest builds of 10 with the latest one.

I hope they bring back the Windows Classic Theme for this one.
