Brought farcry 6 the other day. A physical copy because I like my physical media, but also because I don't like having to download massive games but you know what?
I might as well have though.
The great thing about discs was that you oculd just put it in the console and go. No download or install required. Not anymore though. Farcry 6 is listed as "50gb" on the back of the case, reasonable for ps4 games. Stuck it in the console and its "copying" (whatever that means, since I still need the disc in the console to play it) ~40gb. Why?
And to add insult to injury, before it even finishes copying itself, it starts downloading a ~10gb patch
I just want to play my game, not sit round waiting for stuff to download or install

So what happens if you disconnect the console from the internet?
Will it let you play after the copy?
If it does the physical disc still holds value in the sense that the game is present on it

Physical games let you preserve games as they were on release
In UMvC3 they removed a DLC costume for Magneto. The costume still exists on the disc though, the dlc just makes it selectable.
Hex editing lets you use the costume.

There are probably more examples out there but thats the point I find in owning the physical game aside from the disc/manual art.

It'll just continue copying whatever its copying. The download is presumably just the day one patch, since I've been playing it just fine without it.

I agree, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that it annoys me I can't just put a physical copy in and play it. Instead I have to sit round and wait for it to install itself (CoD is the worst in this respect) and start downloading a day one patch, which you're going to have to download if a game is always online or if you want to play the multiplayer portion.
