Let's get philosophic: what is a friend?

I believe the definition presented in the video bellow is spot on.

You might operate with a different set of premisses and your definition of friend might be different.

Can people with different definitions of friendship be friends?

Description and Video:
Objectivism is an egoist philosophy. It holds that you should put yourself first. In that context, what does it mean to be a friend?

In this webinar, William Thomas discusses what friendship is, what Objectivism can teach us about it, and what kinds of errors Objectivists are prone to make in friendship.

The webinar discusses issues such as determining the potential for value in a relationship, the trade-offs between different types of values in friendship, and the application of principles of justice in resolving disputes or recovering from misdeeds.

This 64-minute webinar recording consists of a 29-minute audio presentation and slide show by William R Thomas. After his prepared remarks, Thomas answers questions submitted by the original live participants for the remaining 35 minutes.

Without having watched the video (Yet. Might save that for after I hit the cap. If I have the time.), and not having any friends, my simple definition would be someone who you can trust, can not only stand to be with but actually want to spend time with, and who you would be willing to sacrifice to your utmost limit for and feel that they would do the same.

Like a dog?

If a friend suddenly decided that he would teach you how to fish, but would not give you the fish, would he still qualify as friend?

A friend is a living being that intentionally helps you out in some way or ways. And yes, it could be a dog.

Edit: Never mind, this was my drunken idea of a joke in a serious thread and it wasn't very funny

How things look and how things are are two very different things.

Your tulpa must have undergone quite an ordeal to arrive at the conclusions it did.
I had a feeling I wasn't going to get away with that

It's like I've disembodied the logic center of my brain; it's ruthless and cold, but seemingly never wrong.
