This gets a solid 4.5 stars. It may even deserve 5 stars, though I don't know if it QUITE compares to something like the first Matrix or Everything Everywhere All At Once. I dunno. I'll let the reader decide. In any case, what this movie does so very well is combine the dark and the viscerally, brutally violent, with things that are so lovingly wholesome and beautiful. I don't know if I've ever seen a movie do this better. Maybe Lord of the Rings? But Lord of the Rings is a lot less "personal". That's a continental conflict. Unleashed is FAR more intimate in its focus.
Unleashed gives us some of Jet Li's best fighting. Although it's not quite to Tony Jaa's level as seen in Ong Bak 2, it's still quite awesome to see and fits the character and movie very well. It's a very scrappy sort of style. May not be very realistic, but that's alright. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief somewhat. And finally, this movie concludes with yet another great song by Massive Attack called Aftersun. Definitely check this movie out. The only people that I think would ever dislike this movie are those that are put off by its gritty violence.
