DEF CON 19 - Matt 'openfly' Joyce - The Art of Trolling
Don't Look Under The Internet: Temple of The Screaming Electron
Fellas found something you old heads might like, or get pissed off at. I think they might be running on some misguided ideas about a free speech site.
I didn't see that second video until just now. Here's my thoughts on it.
14:23 - Free speech sites definitely do have more edgy topics for sure, but what I don't like is their assumption that that's ALL you're going to find on such sites. You also have a lot of amazing stuff too. They cherry-picked a bunch of text files and made it out to be like it was this crazy fucking place with only crazy fucking people posting racist and hateful stuff. And we haven't even gotten into the huge ass myth that "all the good speech has a platform already and the bad stuff generally doesn't." And yet, I see FAR more unhinged and misleading shit on Twitter and Reddit. Not to say that TOTSE was completely flawless. I've made my thoughts on Bad Ideas clear multiple times already now.
28:16 - They actually start to get it here somewhat even though they're joking around. A bit of a rebellious attitude here and questioning. But it's there and quickly gone again.
32:28 - Some positivity. Nice to see.
40:16 - Didn't mention Jeff Hunter's VERY well-written response to that news article. In fairness though, it's a bit hard to find nowadays.
45:36 - Actually, there's not nearly as many of those kinds of sites as you think. In fact, there's SO little sites of that sort that we are basically the only ones left.
47:26 - Oh boy, "hate speech"... I thought this would come up. Though they do back it down later, shortly, by defending free speech, so that's good. I think they could definitely be talked to here. They don't sound unreasonable.
48:54 - Once again, it's not ALL bad. Some amazing speech, you wouldn't ever have without full free speech. At the time when the US made the Declaration of Independence, the speech that the founding fathers were sharing was equivalent to what might be considered "terrorist" speech today.
Ultimately, listening to them talk about TOTSE towards the end and how its members broke off and went into other communities, I'm heavily reminded of that Pirates of the Caribbean meme.
"You must be the worst website I've ever heard of."
"... But you HAVE heard of me."
53:20 - Jeff Hunter just posted his lame-as-fuck TTFN and vanished forevermore. There was no mention by him of law enforcement (at least as it concerns the end of TOTSE). Anything said at this point is basically just wild speculation. And it's not like he couldn't have sold the server he had just invested in. As to the TOTSE army stuff, I was under the impression that he put the kibosh on that a bit ago before the end.
56:02 - Jeff Hunter did pass everyone off to Zoklet at the time, so it wasn't like it was just this COMPLETE shutdown without any pass-over of the website whatsoever, but all the same, it was done VERY shittily and very quickly.
57:59 - Ok, I giggled a little bit at this.
1:04:56 - Oh don't worry. They'll learn some critical thinking very fucking quickly while they're here. :) That is what's nice about building a site culture like that. It speaks for itself pretty much.
1:10:30 - That is one beautiful, cute pussy right there. 10/10
I will try reaching out to them via their Discord. I'm really interested in talking to them further about all this.
