On the 13th of Februrary, 2012, a podcast was created with Duncan Trussell as the host called The Duncan Trussell Family Hour. At the time, Duncan was going through a breakup and had to abruptly cancel the podcast that his and his ex-girlfriend, Natasha Leggero, had collaborated in making called The Lavender Hour. Little did he know that this would all be the catalyst that would culminate in, as of this writing, 653 episodes full of interviews with exotic guests, and what would be included directly via clips from that podcast in this animated show, The Midnight Gospel.

This animated show is about a certain Clancy Gilroy who has and uses an unlicensed multiverse simulator. He tours these DMT-esque universes a bit and interviews residents of such for his spacecast. This is where the clips from the Duncan Trussell Family Hour podcast come in. The clips used are basically what are, in Duncan's opinion, the greatest hits of the podcast, so to speak. Now, though this show is only one season long, Duncan actually had full plans for a second season right after the first and perhaps more, BUT... Netflix, the show's financial backer, swooped in and did what they do best. They completely cut the show since it wasn't making all the money in the world at launch despite great critical and general audience reception.

The good news though is that the show at least has a great ending, though the last episode arrives abruptly. In terms of the animation, Duncan was talking about this on the Joe Rogan podcast, episode 1464. He was talking about how much work went into drawing every single frame of this show. And it shows because if you look, you can see a hell of a lot of visual symbology in the background. And it's strange too, because the animation looks so simple and effortless, but it's just... Not. A ton of work went into this from head to tail.

If I had a single complaint about this show, it's definitely that it pushes the Buddhist idea of nirvana being the ideal. Now that kinda bugged me. But regardless, this show still has a ton of good in there and it had me hooked from the first episode to the last. This is definitely the kind of material that Sanctuary celebrates. Stuff that explores the boundaries. Stuff that makes you THINK. And that's why I'm still gonna give it five stars and also due to all the detail and work that went into it.

(Oh, by the way, the name Midnight Gospel means basically the good news of a gospel despite the midnight around us.)
