The Curious Case of USB Thumb Drive Random Slowdowns on Write

I've gotten this with two entirely different drives now with at least two operating systems, but it seems after a while of reading and writing, these USB drives will seem to hit... Something during writing literally anything to the drive and just almost if not COMPLETELY halt for about 2-5 minutes before picking back up again. I have NO idea why or what's going on. Even further, chkdsk says there's nothing wrong with the drive.

Is anyone else getting this nonsense? If I had to guess, the drive is htting something in its memory that requires it's tiny little bargain bin chip to process a lot of work.

Are you using flash drives from over a decade ago? I got a couple of old drives from like 2017 but they never do what you describe.

Check the power settings in properties for the USB controllers in control panel - device manager. I've had mine acting weirdly when allowed to save power and not wake the computer. Check ALL of them.

There are more powerful tools out there than chkdsk. I had to use one recently to format a drive, since the normal tools wouldn't work. I forgot the name of it, though.

Nah, these aren't relics of a forgotten time. lol One of them is actually relatively recent.

I'll try looking at it again, but I think I already tried this.

You may be thinking of CrystalDiskMark. And yeah, I haven't tried that one yet.
