First of all, before anything else, if you dislike TLJ, please watch this first so we're all on the same ground.
It's always bugged me that I could never figure out why TLJ was met with such a vehemently negative popular reception. I'm usually pretty astute about what people really actually like and dislike about a particular game or movie even if I may not personally agree with it. But as I was watching EckhartsLadder's review of TLJ, I FINALLY had the epiphany I was looking for in regards to TLJ's unpopular reception. I guess I never thought about it until now since I had quickly gotten so preoccupied with defending the movie from all the damn hate it was getting. You see, I don't think TLJ is a bad movie at all. In fact, I still think it's an amazing movie. But I realized that the million dollar question isn't actually "Is it good movie?", but, "Is it a good STAR WARS movie?" And with that, I quickly began to see what so many people were actually complaining about.
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts had this exact same issue. When it came out, it was met with a ton of hate from the majority of gamers even though by itself, it was an absolutely fantastic game. But it was a shitty BK game. Halo 4, same issue. Good game. Shitty Halo game. And this is probably also why the Star Wars prequels are now getting more of a positive reception than they were at release. We can say what we want about the prequels (and oh boy, is there a lot to say), but at least they still FELT like Star Wars despite all their issues.
And so, I'm still holding out hope that people will finally calm the fuck down when it comes to TLJ. There may not have been a whole lot of Star Wars in it at all, and that's a pretty fair criticism, but I still stand by the fact that it's an incredible movie about learning from your past and going forward into the future.
