PSA: Launch Edition PS3s Have Input Lag on All PS2 Games

I was playing around with the idea of getting an original PS3 for a sort of all-in-one PS1/PS2/PS3/bluray player system since I know that the first launch PS3s shipped with the PS2's CPU and GPU chip built in as well (the later 80 GB model stripped out the CPU), after doing some reading online, it looks like even the original launch PS3s suffer from 3 frames of input lag due to the PS3 needing to turn the video signal into 480p and doing a bad job of it. Also, overheating.

So yeah, looks like I'll just be sticking with my phat PS2 after all. I'll probably still get a launch PS3 sometime if I can find one for a really good price, but otherwise, my enthusiasm to get one has, uh... diminished.

Never got a launch one. Traded in my ps2 and games for a later model ps3. Still got it, still love it.
Picked up a ps2, plus memory card, two controllers and 3 games for $50 when ebgames was clearing out their remaining ps2 stuff, a few years later.
Whats your ps2 model?

It's an original (not launch) SCPH-39001 (model version 7). Apparently the last US version they released before versions 9 and 10, both of which had major issues with the optical drive. Version 11 fixed it but was only released in Europe. Version 12 and on were the redesigned slim PS2s which nixed the expansion bay and has slightly less compatibility with both PS1 and (ironically) PS2 games.

EDIT: I kinda knew the SCPH-30001R/39001 models were more sought after, but I didn't think people wanted $150+ for them these days. Damn.

mod it.
Soft modding them (atleast my slim one was) is super easy

Well, besides playing "backup" games, I'm not sure why I would want to do so. Though, of course, that would be pretty nice.
you can use it to run emulators too.
Its alot more convenient than trying to buy physical copies too, especially for ones that have high nostalgia value.
If you were worried about damaging the console, all you need to do is tape down a sensor so you can you open the tray lid Nevermind, I forgot the fat models have a slot, not a lid (?). Not sure they steps for modding a fat model. Would still recommend it though

Roger that. Wouldn't the PS2 have a hard time running emulators for the 3D consoles though? If anything, that sounds more like something you'd want to do with the original Xbox. Of course developers can specifically optimize for the PS2 hardware, but I don't know just how much that would make a difference in terms of performance.

i was meaning older consoles, specifically nintendo.

something you might want to look into, There was some sort of linux distro specifaclly for ps2. I don't know much about it but it might be of interest to you

Phat ps2 can run games directly off sata I think
Slim models are force to use the usb 1.0 connections I think or go the physical disc route

Wouldn't recommend a ps3 for a media player
If playing videos via usb they have some gay ass fuck software which detects license bs and will mute the audio. Happened with me playing recent releases and without an internet connection. Maybe there are homebrew media players which bypass this but I didn't look into it
Discs should be fine

Wouldn't recommend a ps3 unless you really want to play the exclusives on it (a bunch of racing games)
I only keep mine around as I got hex editing to work out on it
They're all doomed to die one day anyway

Isn't ps1 emulation solved?

Not true. Partially.
Yes you can run roms of USB, but you can also run roms from pc via ethernet.
Fats can install a HDD but they need older ide drives, I believe. Though I'm sure you could use adapters to get a sata drive working.

That is pretty gay, though why don't you just use a laptop hooked up to the TV for movies on USB?

I was never all that interested in the PS3's exclusives, but if the system actually did its job and had flawless (or at very least near flawless) PS2 emulation, then I could just get a phat PS3 and replace my PS2 right then and there while getting a blu-ray disk player and the ability to play PS3 games out of the deal. But it looks like that's not gonna work like it's supposed to. My slim 360 handles the needs I have for that console generation pretty damn well anyway I guess, and I don't have to use a lame PS controller too. Sadly though, the 360 has no blu-ray player and obviously no PS compatibility on it of course. And modding a 360 is still a bitch.

Isn't ps1 emulation solved?
Pretty much, but I wasn't gonna get it for that. Also, the phat PS2s have super good PS1 compatibility anyway.

That is good to know

The sata thing:

Nothing stopping you but thought I'd mention it

Input lag aside I still wouldn't tell you it was a good idea since it would die on you one day
Really only worth while if you're dying for the exclusives and willing to redo the thermal paste at this point to play em

and I don't have to use a lame PS controller too
I'd kill to own an extra ps3 controller
All the chinese knockoffs I've tried universally fuck up the dpad input
I've got an original and man am I gonna be heart broken when it finally eats it

Slim models got a micro sd card adapter

(The embed feature for xenforo doesn't support start/end times)

It isn't perfect but for $20 and no hardware mods required, it offers a lot

Actually, it really does. I'm pretty surprised. Wonder if it works for PS1 games as well.

I was looking at some backwards compatible PS3 videos on YouTube, but then I had a thought that pretty much cured my entire desire to get any PS3. Putting the PS2 back compat. aside entirely, what exclusive games does PS3 even have that I'd want to play? Resistance? Halo almost crushes it into the ground. Ridge Racer? Burnout 3 is better and is fully backwards compatible on the 360. God of War? Ninja Gaiden makes it look like a side-show. Ratchet & Clank? That's pretty decent, but most of the good ones are on the PS2, and the third R&C did pretty much everything I wanted from an R&C game anyway. inFamous? Looks pretty repetitive. Gran Turismo? Forza Motorsport 4. Demon's Souls? I guess... Almost all the Dark Souls games though are on the 360 and the PC so that's barely a thing. LittleBigPlanet? Admittedly, there's no full equivalent for this game on the 360, but... Give me a damn break. It's a 2.5D platformer. Whoop-dee-doo. Might as well just play something on my Gameboy Advance SP. And finally... There's Uncharted. Which, I guess, is decent, but it looks like it has no replay value at all, and I'm not shelling out money just to play a mostly cinematic third-person shooter, no matter how well executed.

I guess that only leaves the PS2 back compat... Except I already have a full phat PS2. The only other thing I can think of is that the PS3 will translate the PS2 video signals to HDMI for you, but I already have a really damn nice component to HDMI converter. So what the hell is the point of getting a PS3 even if it was a backwards compatible model? The PS2 seems to be where all the amazing exclusives are.
