Sony's killing physical media, we've all seen this by now.
They claim its "consumer demand" and "preference" which is bullshit. They made the preference for digital consoles by making the disc based versions pricier, and then making the disc drive a separate purchase.
It also indirectly suggests that the ps6 is likely going to be a 2028 release but who cares. It'll be overpriced, undersupplied and with minimal graphical differences.
I've seen people acting like microsoft are now the "good guys" because they supposedly working on a disc-to-digital system, but they seem to forget that microsoft are just as bad as sony. Have they forgotten the recent round of closures?
How long till they decide to stop making cases too, and buying "physical games" amounts to browsing a gift card isle

What i haven't seen people mention, and seems to be getting lost in the focus of disc death, is that they also announced the closure for the ps3 and vita stores, where they've said basically we can and will eventually close the store at the same time they say they can only buy from their store now. Its unclear if that means you can't redownload stuff you already purchased, but I'd be willing to be that'll be the case.

Now allow me to put my tinfoil hat, but I think this gives us a window for each stores lifetime.
20 years.
PS3 store opened roughly 2006/7 closes 2026/27
Now, my suspicion is that they will close the ps4 store too and my bet would be 2033, so it's got maybe another seven years left.
Lest we forget
Sony Kills the PlayStation Disc
Sony just decided that "owning" a PlayStation game is a privilege it can revoke.
Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles
In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.
