After seeing Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, I've been trying to find at least one more good stoner movie. I checked out Half Baked, but that wasn't really good at all. I saw the writing on the wall there and decided to quit out of it early. Even Dave Chappelle wasn't a fan of that movie apparently. Next up was this movie then. I remember watching this a long time ago, but lost interest in it midway through. But hey, that was a long-ass time ago. I should give it another chance. Annndddd... Disappointed again. Well... It's not as bad as Half Baked, sure, and it does have its moments, but it's just not a very good movie either.
For one, there's some major plot holes, with the biggest one definitely being how Dale is still technically a wanted felon at the end. Another issue is that Dale, the main character isn't that funny, likeable, or relatable. Sure, he may not be annoying or anything, but he sure as hell doesn't stand out, and if anything, one kinda dislikes him, even at the end of his character arc. Yet another issue is that this movie doesn't actually feel like a stoner comedy. Sure, there's a lot of weed IN it, but so what? Instead, it feels like a lame action-comedy with a weed-themed wallpaper put over it all. Harold and Kumar really understood this genre so much better by having great characters and celebrating marijuana, but also not being a simp for it. It got to the very essence of what everyone wants in these kinds of wacky movies.
Again though, PinEx does have good scenes in it, so it's not completely unsalvageable. I particularly liked the introductory scene that was a flashback to the 1930s experiments with weed. Feels like that entire first scene was taken from a better movie and put into this one. I also think the basic premise of PinEx is pretty good too and could have worked great in another universe where this movie was in more competent hands. Ah well. I guess my search will continue.
