Huh. Didn't even realise it had been removed, was there any reason for it?

The only thing I could find was that it was removed "due to changes with Warner Brother Games' network." Whatever the hell that means.

Putting my tinfoil hat on, I think WB removed it because they want people to buy MKX or MKXI so they could milk consumers with microtransactions.

Ah, the sad prelude to a digital future.
More reason to stick with physical for as long as humanly possible.

I'd agree, if there were any left. But there is no more physical. It's just CD/DVD's with a link to the online store and/or client.
Like steam, PSN, xbox pass, etc.

No, GOG is where it's at. Offline Standalone installers and patches you can store on media-devices yourself.

The future is in fact going to be even worse. Streaming games. Onlive, Stadia, GeForce Now, Luna etc.. It's all coming faster and faster as they push for total control.

I disagree.
On pc, yes its only digital.
But on console, despite the push, physical is still alive and kicking.

Steam is also known to remove games like Dark souls 1 because they wanted to push Dark souls 1 remastered. However if you have the link to the actual game, alike several others removed, you can still buy it and install it from your library.

Even if consoles aren't pushed out by streaming games, then online will almost certainly become a requirement.
I know Xbox have tried it with every new console they released, from the beginning. Latest console even have an "S" (slim?) version with no CD/DVD tray.
Playstation 5 will have a digital edition, also without a tray. PS4 had a slim version without a tray.
Nintendo..I don't know much about them. But my guess is that more stuff will be moved to online, like with the others.
Cloud saves, digital stores, memberships (PSN/Gamepass/eShop), etc.
