News on our Game Server Hosting Situation

Alright. I just got off the phone with my ISP. I got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is due to reasonable security concerns, I can't host servers of any kind anymore while I'm away at college. The good(ish) news is that I'm now willing to pay for a separate server to host. There is some benefits to doing this though. For one, we'll have 100% uptime regardless of what someone else is doing. We can also contribute towards a server pool for the money. So it'll only cost each of us like 2 dollars a month if we all pitch in.

The first thing we need to establish though is, who wants to contribute to the pool, if at all? Note that you do NOT have to contribute! The more money we have though, the nicer the server we can get.

Here's the game suggestions we have so far.
UT2004
GMod
Grand Theft Auto V
Just Cause 2
Halo Online
Star Wars Battlefront 2 (not the gay ass one)
Team Fortress 2
Minecraft
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Skyrim Online
Rust
Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition

EDIT: Removed JKA as me and Batt have pretty much played that game to hell and back. Also removed Freelancer because we don't have enough people for that.

Phantasy Star Online?
Giants: Citizen Kabuto?
Re-Volt?
Factorio?
Terraria?
Ballistics?
Project Eden?
Conquest: Frontier Wars?
Any H'n'S (Diablo-like) game?

For long term: 4X and Grand Strategy?

I must confess to having lost interest in most FPS and RTS games..

ArmA is a good one that is still active, and can be used for "recruiting". It's very admin-heavy, though, from what I hear. Setting up the good mods and gametypes takes a lot of time and fiddling.

Actually... Giants looks really interesting. I'll do some more investigating. We could also do Skyrim online now that I think about it.

I will absolutely admit though that the list is overly FPS heavy. Believe it or not, I actually tried not to do that, but I'm gonna be honest. The most customizable and supported multiplayer servers to run are usually FPS' and there's just no getting around that.

I would keep in mind though that even if we did an FPS, you can use it for chatting too. You don't actually have to play.

Which one did you have in mind? (Although it's usually 2 or 3.)

So umm, my computer-centric gaming is a bit limited at the moment, BUT- I can play Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod; and Minecraft I can probably crossplay from my Xbox. That's where I am at the moment with whats on the list (I have a Mac atm)

Phantasy Star Online and Windward would be good choices.
You can leave the server on, and jump in and out. Takes a long time to level, easy basics to learn. Lots of loot to gather.
Can be played solo, or in groups. and the groups actually do benefit from multiple people.

We already tried Guild Wars but we never really committed to that. And any MMO really does require commitment. Something that is sorely lacking around here (even from me).

They aren't MMO games though. Phantasy Star Online was, but now it's just a client hosted server MP game.
Windward is the same. No MMO.

Sorry, I forgot to reply. PSO still has MMO mechanics though. Windward looks like multiplayer SId Meier's Pirates. Which is actually cool, but I don't think we're gonna get a lot of replay value out of that. Project 5 looks like a different kind of Civilization. Which is also good but again, not a lot of replay value there.

P5: SS Isn't anything like Civilization.. More like a 3rd person ARK/AoE, where you are an A.I jumping from vehicle to building. Building up an ever more automated base. Continue to explore and build..and eventually fight.

I chose games that will require some time, just for that reason. So one could play it as much, or as little as one wanted to. Jump in and out and still have fun. Commitment between 1 and 100% and still matter.

Anyway..Hope school goes okay.

School's over for now. :D

Anyway, yeah, what I mean by not much replay value is that it only offers a small range of experiences. Specifically strategy. And for the game's I'm looking at, I want to get as wide a range of possible experiences as possible. As much versatility out of the game as possible. Since, you know, we're gonna be paying monthly for this.

I've been playing Stardew Valley, and it's pretty cool. Maybe we could find a game like that, some kind of persistent building/gathering/resourcing game where anyone could log in at any time and improve something.

I guess that describes Minecraft.
Arma 3 has mods like that.
There's also Rust.

Rust is a maybe. I'll add it to the list. Minecraft's already listed as a possibility. Arma... It sounds like the game we could really get behind but... I'm just not that familiar at all with it so I don't know what's possible and what's not.

If I had to pick from this list and everyone would magically agree with my decisions, then I would personally go with Garry's Mod, UT2004, or Halo Online.

Yeah, that too.

Although, now that I think about it, it's not really fun to log in one day and see that all your accomplishments have been made obsolete by someone else. I could see that causing a loss of a feeling of investment. Then you have to catch up and gear yourself to gather the hot new thing, since nobody cares about the old resources after a point.

So, should we put these games to a poll or did you all want me to make an executive decision on this?

If you do set up a poll, I wouldn't include GTA on the grounds that we just need to setup a crew and then whoevers playing can just do an invite/crew only session

If GTA V is picked, we're not gonna be playing it on official servers. lol It'll be JC2 multiplayer more or less.
