Microsoft will soon require a Microsoft account for Minecraft

And a phone number too I'm sure. And I swear to fuck, if they lock me out of my Minecraft account because I didn't provide them a phone number, I am going to demand a refund again. I don't give a shit how long it's been. Fuck you, Microsoft. I paid for this account a long time ago, and denying me access to the product after the fact just because you want my phone number is unacceptable.

This sounds all very unnecessary and is being pushed with the excuse of added security clearly, which although it will actually add security with the whole 2 step verification it's not really needed. What's the point of a Microsoft account anyway? The Only reason this is being done is because MS owns Mojang and they want greater control over access to the game via their own account system.

To be a little fair, Minecraft accounts have been getting hacked incredibly frequently, and I also imagine they're tired of managing redundant systems, so they just want to combine them. But even so, it still doesn't excuse the privacy violation.

I recently acquired an interest in learning and playing Minecraft. My brothers played, however I never played. It's something that's seemed interesting to me for quite some time.

That will be hella cool. Is Minecraft only on Windows though or are You able to play it on Linux?
Nope, Java version is Linux-compatible. But after hearing about this shit, you may wanna hold off buying it. That is unless you're willing to give Microsoft a fake phone number.

I wouldn't mind giving my phone number. I have two phone numbers for this purpose. It's nice to know that the java version is Linux-Compatible.

Not strange, a lot of people have 2 phones, one is for personal use and one is for work. My dad has exactly that setup.
I mean, if it's for work, that's different and I'm sure the work subsidizes the payments for the number (if they didn't, that's fucked). For personal use though, you'd need to get two phones and two SIMs for them. Or, you can get a phone that can take dual SIMs I suppose. That's why I'm surprised if it's for personal use.

I don't know about overseas, but here you can get basic phones for dirt cheap and same for sim-cards

Yes, paid to my provider phones. I have two different phones and two different SIM cards, both I pay for, it's partly for work, partly to sort out telemarketers. One of them is a flip phone and the other is a smart phone. One nice thing about it is that when one goes missing, I can use the other to call it to find it, which is a plus. It only costs me $80.00 a month to have both phones.
