I'm in the midst of writing a series of stories I've titled "Deviant". In my series, an elective surgery company has began providing a procedure that alters humans into anthropomorphic animals, known broadly as furinoids. Ten years after their initial procedure, it is revealed that what was thought was only a cosmetic procedure actually involves genetic modification. In other words, the furinoids had actually become part animal.
I'm wondering what genre I'd call this. I have heard of the "first contact" genre, however the problem with first contact stories is that they make a spectacle of the initial contact and don't really delve into the cultural adaptations of humans adapting to living with another sapient species. All other science fiction is usually set 100 years in the future or more, when everyone who remembers a time before the "aliens" have died out. My series primarily focuses on the cultural growing pains that occurs after first contact, the inevitable conflict that happens.
I'm primarily wondering if anyone knows of any series, whether it be books, movies, tv shows or video games that explores similar subject matter. I'll post a link to the collection of stories in the series after being given the approval.
