According to statcounter.com anyway. Windows is beginning to drop real fast, and I hear MacOS is in the same boat as well. Good. Fuck them both.

If MS pushes that “windows as a service” business model for future OS releases, they’re gonna throw more lead into the balloon

I think they'll do it. They're so oblivious these days. I think the first step they'll try though is you'll no longer be able to make local accounts on your machine.

I see the use case for businesses since a lot of them use AD anyway, but pls no force the entire user base. They certainly made creating local accounts on Win10 unintuitive for users that aren’t as confident when setting up their machines. Don’t know about Win11 though, never owned a machine that had it installed.

I wonder how long it’ll be before we get a lot of PCs that have the SOC thing going on (and how long it’ll take for virtualbox to work on them again)

Oh they will. It's coming. Switch to MX Linux now and save yourself.
Haven’t heard of that distro, but I’ll check it out. I’ve still got an Ubuntu dual boot on my beeg computer and mint on one of my laptops. It’ll be nice to smell that new Linux smell again

Check this huge guide out I wrote: https://intosanctuary.com/index.php?media/the-windows-power-users-guide-to-linux.23/

If you don't want to watch it, all good. There's also a transcript of it you can read here: https://intosanctuary.com/index.php?threads/transcript-the-windows-power-users-guide-to-linux.1301/

I will say, it's a little outdated now, having been made when the latest version of MX was 21 instead of 23, so some of the tips in there aren't really needed anymore such as the tip for Xbox One controllers, but for the most part, it holds up very well.

interestingly, the steam hardware and software survey currently shows all linux versions at only 1.87% - about 40% of which is from the steamdeck. wish more gamers knew how far gaming on linux has come. for the unaware, steam in particular has a compatibility layer called proton which runs most games very well. compatibility for specific games can be checked on https://www.protondb.com/

thanks to progress on the linux-compatible anticheat softwares, the list of compatible games should continue to go up over time. that was the biggest issue for a while, now it's just up to the devs on if they want to allow it as an alternative to the windows-only anticheat software they package in their games.

I'm sure that Linux usage is actually at a lot more than that due to dual-booted systems, honestly. Further, browsers may spoof their OS in the user agent string.
