I normally don't like to post about personal drama, but I need to vent somehow. There is a very real possibility of being homeless in the near future. The chances are on the lower end of the scale, but going from near-0% to 5% chance is a pretty big deal.

For the last 7 years, I've been living with an old high school buddy. I moved in with him because I could afford to move out of my parents house, and moving forward with my life is always a good idea when you're 27, and still have not made that first step. Living with him and his other buddies has had its challenges, but considering the cheap rent and good location, it's been well worth the headaches. I also was only 15 minutes away from my family, so I could go visit them any time I wanted.

All of that is changing this week. My parents sold their house and are moving 2 hours away, if I take a ferry. My friend is moving out and going to Texas, and I kinda doubt I'm going to see him again. I'm not getting kicked out just yet, but since his mom owns this house, she's going to need to rent out the empty rooms or sell the house. The problem is not only that I suddenly am going to get stuck with a bunch of Craigs list randos, there's a big concern that she'd even find anyone willing to live here. She's a hoarder, and since it's her house, she's always leaving things here. So while there is room here for me and my stuff, anyone viewing the house gets turned off immediately. So in all likelihood, she's going to sell and I'm going to be out on my ass with no explored territory for me to retreat to. I can try to find a new place, but I don't want to get stuck in a situation where I have to keep moving all my expensive stuff all by myself. Hell, with my parents out of the area, I will have to rent some truck or van just to have a bed elsewhere.

First of all, can you drive? And have you finished college?

I can drive, and I even own a nice brand new 2017 car. The problem is that my family is still my emotional support group, and I work in one of the worst traffic corridors in the state. If I get a new place, I'm probably going to spend just enough time on the road to get into bed once I'm home, or I could live closer and never save any money ever again.

Living closer to my family is out of the question.

I have not, but my IT job is paying me pretty well so that's not even a consideration for me. Money isn't a big part of my woes, only in so far that I'd like to buy a house with what I'm saving right now and cost of rent in the area is so high that I'll basically break even. Its about a year too soon to make that jump. I've been banking around $10k every 6 months or so, at least when I'm employed. The last 6 months were very spotty in that regard.

You could get a rural development loan. https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/single-family-housing-direct-home-loans/

Thanks, I'll look into it. I was hoping to move south, but my family moved far north. Also part of the dilemma

If worse comes to worst, you can also head into work and tell them that you'll need a pay increase or you won't be able to live in the area anymore.

If you lose your job, remember to get food stamps. If you're too mentally and/or physically disabled to work or move or etc., apply for SSDI and use Interim Assistance while you're waiting for a decision.

I certainly hope it doesn't come to that. I have a better chance of living out of my car in their parking garage and using the shower than any other rock-bottom thoughts so far.

I think you may have more options than you might think.

Sounds like you have a good amount of notice. I would suggest using that time to do some research into what sort of accommodations you can afford, so that when the time comes, you're prepared.

I find that adequate preparation always helps to avoid stress.

You can always get your stuff in a storage unit and stay in a bed and breakfast deal with your essentials while you try to find a more permanent solution. I used AirBnB to find a place to stay while at school this past semester. It's definitely got its downsides, and it'd cut big into what you're putting into savings, but at least it'll mean a roof for a while.

Talked to my roommate that's leaving. Sounds like in a worst case scenario, he gives until nov-dec before I'd get the boot. Also, I was expecting rent to go up, but it sounds like it won't be that much, if at all. I'll have to pay for a storage room I've been borrowing for years, but that's apparently better than an actual storage facility, because after a few months, they'd be charging about 50% of my current rent for one of their small rooms. They always have an easy introductory rate, but they climb high after a few months.

your solution is as simple as taking a nice warm bubble bath along with a glass of nice red wine along with 2g or 3g of xanax

youll feel much better.

Nah, I'd use a gun. Longer waiting period to change my mind with and easier to get a hold of instead of convincing a doctor to give me the meds. Also, I get to make a mess for someone to find which could be cool if I hated them.

So, based on your situation I think the easies solution for now is to find a cheap apartment and lay low on the expenses until you find a credit company that won't indebt you for the next 40 years.

My advice? buy (Don't rent) an apartment and don't bother with houses for a while, apartment loans can be easily paid off within a span of five years and then it's all uphill from there, as long as you keep up with them that is.

I'm pretty sure I'd get banned if I streamed that.

Don't, death is so final. All you are end up going to see is nothing but blackness, and silence, and nothiningness.

Live on, heck I rather be a hobo beggar than kill myself.
