How to Make a Microsoft Account WITHOUT a Phone Number (MOSTLY INVALID)

UPDATE: This does NOT work for Microsoft games after all. You can create the account and do whatever you want with it, but the second you try signing in to a Microsoft-published game, it will insta-lock the account and force a phone number to be registered. Now, I have a suspicion that it's actually my VPN that's setting it off, but either way, it's unacceptable and doesn't even stop spammers.

I don't know if this is a recent addition to their accounts or if this actually existed for a long time, but regardless, it has very recently come to my attention that a Microsoft account at least now does not actually require a phone number on creation. You do need to follow an extra step though in making the account that you wouldn't normally otherwise do, but otherwise, it's pretty straightforward.

So, as we know, a new Microsoft account will be locked sooner or later unless there is a backup phone number for 2FA. But I just found out that you don't actually need to put in a phone number for 2FA and can just put in another email instead. Now, I don't know if Microsoft is going to accept emails from just any domain, but this is highly optimal regardless, because mail.com addresses work, and mail.com addresses can be created super easily on the fly using any temporary email as their mandatory secondary email for the account.

Now that you have an email account and a secondary burner mail.com account that isn't temporary and can access anytime if you ever need it, you can now just make the MS account as normal with your chosen primary email account, whatever it may be. Now here's the key part. After creating your Microsoft account with your chosen primary email, you need to head into your account settings, go into the Security section, and then add your secondary mail.com address (or I guess, whatever you choose to add as your secondary email). You don't need to turn 2FA on when you do this, so don't worry.

Once the secondary email is verified and set, you're good to go. So, why is this important? For three major reasons I can think of.

1. To access any Microsoft-published game these days including the MCC, they want you to login at least once with a Microsoft account. This used to be a huge issue due to the phone number requirement. But since we can now avoid that completely, the impact of having to make a Microsoft account now drastically decreases to just a minor annoyance.

2. On that note, any Minecraft Java accounts will sooner or later be migrated over to use a Microsoft account instead. Again, this is no longer an issue at all for the same reasons.

3. If you want to link your Windows license(s) to a Microsoft account for easy validation, that becomes more of a viable option.

I'll be honest, I don't see what the big deal is. Most services let you skip a phone number and use an email instead

If you create a Microsoft account and you don't add some sort of secondary number or email, your account WILL get locked, and you will then be absolutely forced to provide a phone number to unlock it. I've made two or three new separate Microsoft accounts through the MCC and they ALL got locked after a few days even though I literally did aboslutely nothing with them besides login to MCC. But if you head it off at the pass on account creation and set up a secondary email, your account won't get locked.

Again, maybe this was a thing before and I just didn't know it because Microsoft does an awful job of explaining things, but I know I'm not the only one that's had problems with their MS accounts being locked like this.
