How to Effectively Negotiate a Deal

Negotiating a good deal is much easier than people think. These rules of mine apply to both sides, buying and selling. And rule number one is...

1. Always be willing to walk away.

It's not even a negotiation if you're not willing to walk, and the other party will probably pick up to this fact and take advantage. Then you're bent over a barrel.

2. Know your product.

And also, know the current market for that product too. If you're selling a graphics card for $500, but 75% of the other sellers are selling the exact same card in the exact same condition for $300, then be prepared for a whole lot of nothing. Yeah, you MAY get lucky and get a buyer anyway, but if the market isn't really hot, then that is absurdly unlikely. You have better things to do than to waste your time trying to make impossible deals.

3. Be polite.

Nobody wants to do business with a jackass. Or maybe they still might, but they will probably try to rip you off somehow just because of your bullshit attitude. Nevertheless though, be firm. If you're visibly wavering, then the other party may press you harder.

4. If the deal/negotiation looks too good, be VERY cautious.

Pretty self-explanatory. Don't get scammed. A whole lot of that going around these days...
