I know this movie is incredibly famous for its action, but to be honest, I was kinda hoping for a little more in the plot department. (I watched this movie subbed by the way.) I mean, the story is... Fine. It's fine. Okay. Serviceable. But it just really does not hook you. Or at least, it didn't really for me. Towards the end, my mind was starting to wander, which is not a great sign. The villain is Saturday morning cartoon evil, the mooks expendable, the women cute and innocent, and the protagonists noble badasses. There's a little bit of depth there with some undercover characters, but even with that, it's still surface level character development.

Alright, but the ACTION though. How is that? Well, it's definitely very bombastic and cheesy, but satisfying. Hard Target definitely comes to mind when thinking about this movie, although admittedly, I think I prefer Hard Target over this movie if all you're looking for is cheesy satisfying action, but Hard Boiled does have that satisfying slo-mo and randomly explosive bullets/shotgun pellets. But then... I ALSO found the action kinda hard to track at times. There's so much shit flying across the screen so quickly and (camera) shots transitioning quickly to other shots that, a fair few times, I lost track of it.

Still though, you wouldn't be making a terrible choice whatsoever watching this movie. Oh, and for some reason, I got some Japanese vaporwave (yes, I know this is set in Hong Kong) vibes when watching this movie as well. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. If you're not absolutely set on watching this though, then I would definitely advise you to watch Hard Target instead. That movie, I feel, has the more polished action and the dialogue is pretty funny to boot.

You were actually expecting compelling plot on a John Woo film? My guy just enjoy the ridiculous action because thats all what John Woo movies are for.

Don't worry. I totally understand that, but even then, I still think Hard Target is the better film to watch.
