What is wrong with launchers?
Because they are not needed. They are an unnecessary extra that exerts control over Your property. Together with data collection, hostage/sunk cost fallacies/situations, DRM, exclusives, and wasted RAM, processing power, space and bandwidth keeping them all churning in the background, among other things... They are bad for gamers, good for companies.

I guess it's kind of a "why not" situation. They're trying to work with as many platforms as deeply as possible. Might as well just quickly integrate the console APIs while they're at it.

It can be summed up simply by saying that all these extra launchers benefit the companies only. They provide zero benefits to the consumer as opposed to just sticking with Steam. And if you want to buy and play a certain game, you have to purchase it on that launcher and fuck you if you don't want to do that.

GOG Galaxy 2.0 looks to change that, finally.

It sounds like you'll still need to use the service to buy the game, but then afterwards you can just install and launch from Galaxy. The way you phrase it makes it sound more like a storefront than a library manager

I think you can just purchase the games through your browser. Steam will let you do it. Don't know about Origin/Uplay/Epic/Whatever.
