Crysis 3 - First Impressions

As I'm finishing up my Linux video, I needed footage from one more game, and I decided to give that slot to Crysis 3 Remastered as a final fancy graphics showpiece for Linux and also because it probably wouldn't be completely dull for viewers to idly watch some gameplay footage from it while listening. Before I decided on this though, EA decided sort of recently to do at least one pro-consumer thing and release Crysis 3 on Steam completely DRM free and not needing the fucking Origin client to play it. Credit where credit is due. I would never have expected that from EA, but there you go. So, it's allowed to go in the video.

Anyway. There is no doubt that Crysis 3 sure looks pretty. I don't think anyone's gonna debate that at all. It also does seem to serve as a good modern benchmark as well if anything else. Nevertheless, how it evaluates as an actual GAME is another matter. I really didn't hate playing Crysis 3 at all for the few hours I gave it, but man, it really does have a lot of rough edges to it, especially compared to the original.

For one, the game starts you off with corridor shooting. And then follows it up with MORE corridor shooting. You never feel like you're truly being let off the leash. And for a Crysis game, I'm sorry, but that is just really lame. I do not understand how Crytek in 2013 still persisted with this kind of level design after everyone lauded the first Crysis for its incredibly wide-open first few levels. But maybe I wouldn't have minded as much at all if the core shooting was fun, but that has some issues too which I'll get into. First though, a really annoying bug (that REALLY should have been fixed with the Remastered edition but I guess Crytek management just wanted to push the remaster out the door as fast as possible). If you rebind your keys during the first level, you will get soft-locked at certain parts until you change them back to defaults. Really, Crytek? And this issue was reported by users a LONG time ago too.

Ok, moving on to the gameplay. For starters, I really just want to say that them neutering Speed mode in Crysis 2 and now in 3 fucking sucks. Maybe it got focus-tested out. Maybe it got neutered for console players. I don't know. Speed mode in the first game though was incredibly useful, and now in this game right along with the second Crysis, it takes a dump. C'mon, guys... Furthermore, Cloak mode is, as always, really overpowered. I would have kept it as it was in the first Crysis but greatly cut it down to 2.5 seconds of cloak when sprinting, 5 seconds of cloak when walking, and 10 seconds when crouch-walking. In fairness though, this isn't really a Crysis 3 problem so much as a general Crysis problem. Still though, the mode has gone unbalanced. Armor mode is kept as it was in Crysis 2, mostly, which is good, though I liked both Crysis 1 and 2's Armor modes. And finally, they should have brought back Strength mode BUT rolled it into Armor mode if they were gonna go with the Crysis 2 style Armor mode.

Alright. Enough complaining about the Nanosuit. Let's complain about the AI now. And I got two big complaints about them. The biggest one is definitely that these motherfuckers are WAY too hard to see. Maybe on the console with auto-aim, it's fine, but on the PC, it's garbage. And I know there's a perk which highlights them and shows bullet trails, but give me a break. I shouldn't need a perk to spot them with a good once-over. Once again, Crysis 1 (and I think, even 2) didn't have this issue, but 3 does. The second issue is that they got some bullshit awareness. For example, I'd have a ton of enemies focused on my position. Alright. I cloak and get to a better position. And RIGHT when I pop my head out of cover uncloaked to see where they are now, they instantly know where I am again. Fuck that, you cheating bastards. (Yes, I know I have a Nanosuit and they don't. That's not the point. Shut up, okay?)

And now finally, the weapons. They're pretty good but also seem pretty much ripped straight from Crysis 2, so not much to talk about there. Love the pump shotgun in Crysis 1, and it makes another return here. Yehhh boiii.

Except the bow. That does not get a, "Yehhh boiii," from me. But not because it's not good or fun, but because it works WAY too well in Cloak mode. Fucking hell, guys. Cloak is overpowered as fuck already, as we just covered. Now we're gonna add an instakill no-decloak-needed long-range weapon to it? If I wanted godmode on, I'd just type "god" in the console. Thanks anyway though. You can pretty much just ignore it entirely if you don't want to use it, so I don't hate it at all. I'm just slightly disappointed.

As to the story, for the few hours I experienced it, it's certainly alright. Again, I really wish they'd stop trying to lead me around by the nose and shove me through all these corridors, but I guess that's going back to the level design again. But yeah. All in all, an alright game, but still left me a little disappointed. Treat it as if you're buying a nice benchmark program that's packaged with a neat little bonus game right alongside it!

I think actually they probably could have gotten away with the bow with just one simple change. It decloaks you on "firing". That's it. That one little change could have completely balanced it out I think.
