Concerning Our Discord Server

I don't know if we're gonna really be affected by the Discord age verification horseshit since our server is only used as an emergency server pretty much, but I'm still keeping my eye on alternatives. If I get an age verification prompt, I'm going to try to fake that shit out and see if I can get an article out of it. Beyond that, we'll see how things shake up.

There is a possibility they might pull back on the whole age verification thing, given that a lot of their Nitro users are unsubscribing from the service because of the dumbass policy, general privacy concerns regarding data breaches and unpopular UI changes . Its quite a bit of money of lost but idk if it would be enough to force a change in that whole policy on its own.

Well, Roblox just killed Guilded out of sheer fucking greed and stupidity, so I wouldn't put it past these fuckers.

Even if they pull back on the age verification, the inference system is still there to judge every user by their posts and activity on the platform.

I've been trying to look for alternatives myself but none fulfills the needed use case yet.

1. Revolt (or rather, Stoat) is apparently broken and still has very slow development.
2. Root App is closed-source like Discord and is still under works. It only soft launched for public in light of Guilded's death. Apparently one can copy a Discord server's template to it and it'll carry over the role permissions.
3. Element is the Matrix client I use but only for personal conversations. It may be too WhatsApp-y UI-wise.
4. Session and SimpleX are also considered but might be too extreme for a common use case (and Session lacks perfect forward secrecy if anyone cares).
5. I saw others like kloak.app and mezon but I don't know how trustworthy they are.

As I said. I wanna wait till at least a week before they start rolling out age verification before I start seriously analyzing competitors because there could be a big population surge at any time which would completely change the field.

I did a cursory check of it and the problem I can see is that their app situation is pretty damn sloppy. Unpacked Linux release. Beta Android release. And I also heard from another user that features are scattered between the Android and Linux version and don't have parity. Ugh. It could definitely be a strong contender for sure, but they really need to get their shit in order first.

I'm not in any servers beyond my own, but I already found Youtube videos don't embed. There's also a delay sometimes when submitting a post. I do like how you can have spaces in text channel names though. Discord forces you to make your text channels one unbroken name. General_discussion or Paste-text-here channels.
