Anyone here an anti-vaxxer, or do you know someone who is?

If so, what reasons are there to be one?

I know they're treated as a big laughing-stock, but there must be SOME explanation as to why these people believe what they do. It must be based on something. These are reasonable people like you and me, right?

As much as I hate to say it, one of my relatives is. Which is insanely annoying because I KNOW she's not dumb. Although somewhat in her defense, I don't think her problem with vaccines is the whole autism bullshit but simply that they contain some unnecessary harmful chemicals or whatever.

Is she anti-medicine in general, or just vaccinations?

I feel that if you're gonna trust a doctor, you either trust them all the way, or not at all. I don't even pretend to know what's in my OTC medicine, but I'll still take it if it claims to treat what ails me. If a doctor tells me to do something, I'll do it, unquestioningly and without hesitation, with few exceptions.

Except dentists, the parasites...

I could see the logic if someone was super-informed about each and everything they put in their body, but then I'd also expect them to object to a lot of other things that they perceive to be bad for them, not just vaccinations. Is this the case with her?

I don't think she's anti-medicine in general but simply that most doctors don't know what they're doing or they're doing a bad job in general.

I'm kinda on the fence on vaccines. We occasionally still have outbreaks of the diseases, and people who have been vaccinated still get them. Wouldn't that mean that the vaccines are ineffective at best?

I don't personally think they cause autism, but the way any criticism of them is squashed and/or ridiculed makes me think SOMETHING must be going on, and almost everybody I knew that got a flu shot got the flu soon after, and there's some studies saying they (flu shots specifically here) can increase chances of miscarriage

My parents were anti-vaxxers, and I only have half of my required vaccinations. I probably wouldn't vaccinate my children, but I won't be having children so that's irrelevant

It depends. What percentage of vaccinated people get the disease? What percentage of un-vaccinated people get the disease?

If it's something like 2% and 98%[nb]https://www.vaccinestoday.eu/stories/why-do-some-vaccinated-kids-still-get-sick/[/nb], respectively, then it seems like the best thing to do would be to get the vaccine. Even if it can make you less likely to catch a disease, it seems like it would be best to get the vaccine.

Wouldn't you rather be less likely to catch a disease?
Wouldn't you rather be less likely to spread the disease to someone else?

Don't know any anti-vaxxers personally, I luckily live in a country where stupidity isn't a national disease.

The whole vaxxing conversation is a weird one for me. I'm certainly anti-anti-vaxxer, because of my "how fucking stupid are you" reaction to them, but I've not bothered to keep up on my own vaccinations, and I am opposed to vaccinations for simple things like the flu if you're not elderly. I guess just have a level head about the topic and everything will be fine.
