Anger Management (2003) Is An Underappreciated Gem

I rewatched this recently and I have to say, I wish people gave this movie more credit.

Besides the fact I find it generally funny, (although comedy can be so subjective) what is really brilliant about it is noticing all the details. As I watched it a second time, I noticed all the little things Buddy does explicitly to troll the hell out of Dave. It's brilliant. It's also just generally a nice little movie about the positives and the negatives of anger. Yes, it's bad to have too much anger, but suppressing anger too much is almost as bad. We have to have things in balance. When you can truly control your anger and use it as fuel to drive good action, then you really have something.

I wonder if I'd find it more relevant now. In 2003, it came across as a bad movie. Just an excuse to have a lot of silly incidents and tie it all together at the end with the excuse "I did it for a reason, to help you!"

Adam Sandler is kinda like Nickelback on the Internet. People generally don't give them credit for things they do right.

It's all to do with the image he built of himself when he was starting out. Now people can't unsee it.

True. I still hear his name and think he's a favored actor, because of Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. I'll defend some of his newer movies, even Click, but good god, after Mr. Deeds, it was all down hill.

Sandler is one of those artists who are bad not for a lack of talent but for a lack of trying. He made good movies and he played good roles. Hell, I don't share his sense of humor but the guy can act pretty well. He just has a habit of phoning it in, both as a producer and as an actor. And I mean, he gets away with it, power to him, it's just a shame that he never feels the need to challenge himself and actually make something good anymore.
