Don't get much into movies these days but I saw a trailer, said to myself "this looks japanese", and learned it be based on a manga made in the 90s. Having now read the manga, this movie looks bad. First issue I saw was all the humans. In the manga, 99% of background characters have obvious cybernetic implants. Cyborgs are the majority yet here all I could find was 1 guy with a yellow arm in 3 scenes with bustling extras. Cyberpunk my pinky

Second issue:

0/10

I just can't with those CGI eyes.

I mean, someone actually looked at that, thought, "yup, that looks good", and signed off on a million-dollar budget to produce a film featuring it.

Just... how?

Oooo nice use of the table functionality. Oftentimes, it doesn't get used.

Otherwise, for the movie, well... I've seen much worse adaptations. And let's be honest. So have we all.

It's not out yet where I'm from (I think it'll Premier tomorrow) but it seems like it might be OK, then again I never read the Manga or watched the Anime.

Yeah, it comes out tomorrow. It never got an anime, just had two 30 minute OVAs
So a relatively unheard of IP from the 90s got revived and had millions poured into it for the big screen. Also, it'll be getting a sequel which basically cements it'll have a trilogy. I'm a bit conflicted whether to support such practices or not. On one hand, I'd really like more japanese IPs invested into. On the other, I'd rather not have japanese IPs westernized

I mean I get it but to be honest even if it's a multi-million dollar production both James Cameron & Robert Rodriguez do seem pretty passionate about it, though Robert Rodriguez is a very hit and miss director.

As for westernization, I mean I get it but it's a Hollywood production, it would be really strange for it not to be westernized, it would certainly be interesting if Hollywood produced an actuallly Japanese film with Japanese actors but their levels of production, but there's almost no precedent (All I can think of is Mel Gibson's Apocalypto though I'm sure there are more) and I don't think anyone would take that much of a gamble in an action movie.
