Old news but this only seems to confirm for me how crap Chrome is getting. At this point, you should just download Firefox. Or Waterfox if you don't like Mozilla's policies.

Never used Chrome, never planned on it, and I never will.
Same if I can help it. Firefox was very well developed by the time Google showed up with Chrome. Firefox did have some hiccups along the way afterwards, but it only came close to being enough to make me switch once. They've straitened out long since, and I only would consider switching for some very political reasons instead of the functionality of the program.

Chrome just sells your data, so fuck them.

Meh, don't use Chrome, so whatever. Or at least not privately. I do use it a little bit at work, because some internal apps only run on Chrome and Internet Crawler/Edge, and I'll see the world burned to a crisp before I use the latter.
Used to be an Opera man, until an update made it near unuseable on my laptop back then. Switched to Firefox, then got used to it and didn't bother switching to anything else.

As long as it is fast, I don't care how much RAM it uses.

I suspect the main issue caused by the Spectre/Meltdown patches was not increased RAM usage, but slower processing speed.

Firefox was good, but since I found a truly portable Chromium build, I haven't looked back.
