This is why I find it laughable that most YouTube channels and Discord servers and etc. have these strict rules regarding discussing piracy, thinking it's going to prevent any backlash whatsoever, but they won't. If Nintendo doesn't like you enough, it smacks you with the DMCA dick. End of story. (Or at least, they try to.)

  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
Or similar to what you said. Controversial projects should not use Discord or other common 'social-media' platforms.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
I do not do this for piracy. I do it for education and preservation of open-source code.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
Dolphin existed well into the GameCube and Wii commercial lifespan and they have survived as a project. Presumably by not being associated with copyright subversion. Time will tell if that was just some wishful thinking or the reason they still exist with minimal problems.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
(Yes they attempted to list it as an application on Steam which was a proposition with limited upside. Valve contacted Nintendo for permission (lol) who objected to the release but Valve gave the Dolphin project a way out and told Nintendo they were going to cancel the release.)
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
Really the only advantage of listing would be cloud-sync to Steam.
  • @ Arnox:
When the Dolphin emulator was first released, the former lawsuits against emulation (and how they lost) were still sort of fresh in gaming companies' minds, but now, with a generally toothless government, companies are getting ballsy again with consumer abuse.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
    Also true
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
Some people criticized Yuzu for having a Patreon with rewards but also I do know that in some jurisdictions straightforward donations would be treated differently than with a reward (i.e akin to a online purchase).
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
The Suyu project has moved to their own self-hosted chat and Git server so it is slightly encouraging seeing them not entirely fold after the Discord and GitLab takedowns. However there is some doubt if anyone actually involved is competent enough for actual emulator development.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
I think the next few months will be interesting for certain projects.
  • @ Arnox:
I think the Yuzu codebase and any subsequent projects based on it is pretty much a shut case. Official team are out and there are now other teams managing it. No, what I'm interested in finding out now is if Nintendo or any other companies are going to go after any other emulators besides Yuzu.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
I would not entirely call it a shut case at this point. Other projects have faced alleged infringement and gotten forked to a state permitting their public release without the original concerns. Some time ago Google made some noises about YouTube Vanced (patched YouTube APK to allow background playback without ads) and a new team developed and released an on-device binary patcher in response.
  • @ CharlieTheStooge:
About Switch emulation: Ryujinx is still in development and nothing of theirs has been taken-down. So I would not be surprised considering they are already a stable project if more effort is being directed their way. Really the difference between the two is I believe Yuzu and co have higher compatibility and performance due to being programmed in a different way. But like I said how events play out in the near future might be of interest.
